This fibrocartilagenous layer lies between the vertebrae of the spine. A variety of spinal procedures including discectomies require manipulation of IVDs and this rongeur is designed to do so. It features a ring handle design which aids in manual operation as well as the jaws being set at an angle from the handles allowing them to be immersed in the field while the handles are still easily accessible. The ring handles are set at an angle to the very long shaft that ends with jaws. This rongeur can be used in a way that allows the shaft to move very far beyond the incision site while keeping the handle and remainder of the instrument out of the surgical field and easily accessible.
